Redeeming Your SkyMiles

SkyMiles’s redemption rate is approximately 1.2 cents per mile. Delta has also followed dynamic pricing since 2015 for its award tickets, and hence, redemption will vary depending on the demand for a particular route and demand.

1. Award Flights

  • Use miles to book flights with Delta and SkyTeam partners on the Delta Airlines website or app by choosing “ shop with miles.”
  • Pro tip: Book early to snag the best deals since dynamic pricing really fluctuates the miles required to book a flight.

2. Flight Upgrades

  • Upgrade to Delta One, First Class, or Comfort+ using miles For example, an upgrade from Economy to Delta one can vary anywhere from 25000 miles to 50000 miles depending on your Medallion status, the fare cost (higher the fare better the chances of upgrading) and route. It is always better to check on the website to get the exact numbers.
  • Medallion members  usually get complimentary upgrade opportunities or the first preference to upgrade in case of a waiting list.

3. Hotels, Cars & VIP Experiences

  • You can always redeem miles for booking luxury hotel stays at Marriott, Hilton Accor, IHG etc, costing approx $200 in 20000 miles, rental cars can be booked in 15000 miles, and book entire vacation packages in 150000 miles.
  • Make sure to bid on exclusive SkyMiles experiences, like experiencing the  “Legendary Pathways” Voyage on Oceania Cruises, or a New York Yankees baseball game.

4. Pay with Miles Lower Your Flight Costs

  • Use miles to offset ticket prices.
  • There are no blackout dates.
  • Delta’s Miles + Cash lets you mix miles with money for easy redemption options. Though Milesly doesn’t recommend using this method as you end up spending more than the redemption rate.

The transfer ratio is 1:1 (with an excise tax offset fee to be paid on the total transfer) ,which is a decent exchange but you can get better redemptions of AMEX points.

What Is TakeOff 15

Delta offers a 15% award discount to members who have a Delta AMEX Gold, Delta AMEX Platinum, or Delta AMEX Reserve card.  This discount is called “TakeOff 15.”   Remember that these discounts do not apply to itineraries that include partner flights, but otherwise, they are applied across the board.

Maximizing Your Rewards

Plan and Book your flights early:

Since Delta has shifted to a dynamic pricing model for redemption it is always better to plan and book your tickets in advance, you can take advantage of their “5 week flexible calendar” to check out the best deals available. For example, if you are booking a Mumbai to New York one way business class flight, the pricing will fluctuate from 80K miles to 120K miles as it gets closer to departure day.

Use Co-branded cards smartly:

Start using your AMEX co – branded cards to get maximum benefits. Use it for earning points while shopping, hotel booking and dining experiences. If you still aren’t a Delta AMEX card holder then here’s good news, the cards are giving a good chunk of miles (ranging from 80000 to 1,00,000 miles depending on the card you choose) as a welcome offer for new joinees.

Stack Promotions:

Keep an eye out for Delta SkyMiles deals page or simply subscribe to Milesly Newsletter and get the deals delivered directly to your email. You have regular SkyMiles promotions for Flight booking, Shopping deals as well as great Dining options to choose from.

Another cool way to Stack up your points is by booking a Marriott hotel using Amex card and earning  Bonvoy points which can be transferred to Delta Skymiles during promotions to make the most out of the deal.

Check Partner Airlines pricing before booking:

And since you have been reading till this point, let me share an insider tip ! Before booking your flight ticket with Delta Airlines make sure you check out the redemptions and offers running with their partner Airlines. Usually the redemption rates are lower and SkyTeam also has more award availability on international routes. For example, A Mumbai to Paris flight will set you back with 150000+ Skymiles when booking through Delta, whereas, on an Air France flight you will get the same ticket for as low as 75000 Skymiles.

Should Indian Travelers Use Delta SkyMiles?

  • If you frequently fly between India & North America or Europe then Delta Skymiles can be a boon for you. One can book between India to Europe or East Asia, Pacific – using Delta miles and Partner alliance (Skyteam) Here are estimated round-trip redemption costs:

        India to Europe (Economy/Business Class): 50,000 – 120,000 miles.
  • If you have an AmEx Platinum Card then you can transfer points to Virgin Atlantic, Asia Miles, British Airways, Emirates Skywards, and Etihad Guest and then use it to book Delta Flights.
  •  If you strategically use SkyMiles to book partner airlines (like Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic) instead of Delta itself then you will not only save your Skymiles but also enjoy luxury travel perks.
